Frequently asked questions
Catalina is located off the coast of Southern California, just 22 miles from the mainland. It feels worlds away in the best possible way.
Most guests arrive by ferry from Long Beach, San Pedro, Dana Point or Newport Beach. Helicopter service is also available.
Catalina Island is 22 miles long, but most visitors stay in Avalon, the charming harbor town where Snug Harbor Inn is located.
Avalon is a walkable seaside village filled with boutiques, art galleries, oceanfront restaurants and palm-lined promenades. No cars are needed here, golf carts and good shoes do the trick.
Despite the name, it is not a gambling casino. The iconic Catalina Casino is a 1929 Art Deco landmark that houses a grand ballroom and one of the oldest operating movie theaters in the world.
So much, or just enough, depending on your mood. Popular activities include:
• Glass bottom boat rides
• Snorkeling and scuba diving
• Zip lining and eco tours
• Shopping and strolling the harbor
• Beach clubs and spa treatments
• Hiking, kayaking and paddleboarding
• Casino tours and classic movie nights
Avalon offers everything from fresh seafood and casual cafés to waterfront fine dining. Expect fish tacos, lobster, handcrafted cocktails and sunset dinners that last longer than planned.
